Yesterday

Kristi, how did your first day of classes go? Did you meet any new people? Learn any new things? Play any team-bonding games? Keep us ( or me!) updated.

I learned yesterday that we may not have enough third-graders, so I could be switching grade levels. Perhaps even 10 days into the school year. Fun times ahead.

They teach you that way becuase they want you to know that Elementary school is lively and colorful and active, and that you should be too, though I have yet to play with play-doh in my actual classroom. And building bulletin boards is less fun than they make it sound. Getting lost at Willamette is surprising easy, despite the minature size of the campus. or maybe because of it. I sort of expected there to be more of it for the first months. Give it a shot. Use the fact that they are telling you things you know as a good sign. Believe me, there are people there who don't and you are better off than them. And remember, several of the people are just out of college and haven't really been out-of-school adults yet. I didn't make any really life-long friends there, but I did meet people who helped me learn things about teaching, gave me good ideas, showed me how I didn't want to be as a teacher. And above all else, when you are sitting in Classroom Management, try to make it seem real. It may not feel like you will ever have a class like that, but I could tell you stories about last year that would make your hair go gray. I hope that things get better, at least in your appreciation of them. School assignments should be coming relatively soon, so let me know and I'll try to think about what I might know about your school/supervisor, if you'd like.

ha, my hair's already going gray.

thanks for not being all, "nu-uh, YOU'RE the one who sucks!" i know you liked willamette, so i've been trying to think it'll get better...i think it might help if i stop thinking that just because a lot of teachers are a certain way doesn't mean i have to be that way to be a teacher.

oh, by the way, my school is whitworth in dallas. i looked up a profile of it online, and i am disappointed. very white, less poor than the average, and it's so weird thinking of that compared to the schools i worked in in bakersfield, and the ones i hope to work in in nyc. lame. how will my spanish ever improve this way?

I'm not sure yet that I am switching. It is possible however, that I am going to have a 3/4 combination class, after the tenth day of school. We have really low enrollment in 3rd grade this year, 4th grade is climbing up, they are all at like 25 kids apiece right now. Anyway, I have to wait until the 10th day of school to find out. That's not until Wednesday or Thursday after Labor day. I'll keep you posted if I find anything out..

Do you know who your teacher is, or just your school, Kristi?

i forgot to say!!!! my books were brought back today. someone took them, and then when no one was looking left them in the lobby, with a note inside saying "someone took the wrong bag". very weird. but i'm glad i have the books back.

ha, yeah, oregon's so weird about place names. it would make a good trivia question, sort of: "i live in salem, i work in dallas, but i never leave my state! where am i?" it's about 30 minutes away from here, dallas.

i didn't mean to imply that the other students don't have experience with diversity/don't care about teaching in a diverse place---i think there are many of us who have, and do. i need to talk to my guide group person about my worries that my school assignment isn't giving me the proper background for where i want to teach later. but you're right, i'm very glad for the experience i do have...i just keep worrying about what i'll get or won't this year.
