Today

I had a wacky "I'm definitely an elementary teacher" day today. My kids were wacky all day long, and I was wacky alongside them. Fortunately, I did manage to avoid the wacky "teacher sweater" genre, and I think I looked rather cute today. I did however witness the following conversation at lunch.

Girl: I can play every instrument in the world.
Boy: No you can't.
Girl: Yes I can. Just not well. :)
Boy: Can you play a tangerine?
Me: Whaaa???

Also, one of my students spent an hour arguing with me about various geometrical terms. I had no idea if she was right or not, so I sent her to the dictionary to look words up. She continued to argue with me about words within the definitions and ended up stretching math to over an hour and a half today. And she kept getting more and more mad that I was right and she was wrong ( and I did almost no debate with her). She ended up asking me " what do you know nothing about?" so I can win. I told her to go to college and major in Physics and then we'd talk. I'm evil.

Oooh, I was told by a father today that his son has a crush on me. Wink, wink.

And, I have one student who never sits down in his chair. I've been telling him that I am going to superglue him to his seat. Today, I said I needed to invest in Velcro and half my class burst out laughing. They're starting to get my sense of humor!

The End.

capitalism usurps once again

Here's some rather sad news from San Diego.

The famous Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town San Diego will be closing down for good, in favor of an out-of-state concessions conglomerate. Mind you, the location is an Historic State Park that is being leased to a company in Buffalo, New York. This makes me sad. Obviously, I'm not the only one, as this had been talked about for over a year and a half from the time the state started being particular about the terms of the lease.

Not many people know about it either. I was at the fabulous Casa de Pico (with "margaritas the size of your head!" quoth Leaha) on Saturday and ended up being the bearer of news that the restaurant is one of those affected and will be moving to La Mesa. And yes, they, like you, were shocked. Well, La Mesa != Old Town! (in non-computerese, "BUT THAT'S NOT OLD TOWN!"). And the fact that two of the other attractions are also moving, at different times, to different places (a different part of Old Town, and Seaport Village, respectively), doesn't help either.

Now is the time to cite the obligatory "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule. I like the place the way it is, and now we will see yet more construction in the next few years in preparation for San Diego Grandioseness (pennies accepted for my thoughts).

And to the imaginary/hypothetical proponents who tell me to f*** off and if I like it so much why don't I just move to Mexico and live in a real old town and not whine and bitch about it anymore: well, that doesn't sound half-bad at all.

How come people in Florida and South Carolina think this is the way to build along the beach? And how come people in NY think this is the way to vacation at the beach?
